2) Define Distance Learning / Online Learning

Participant Activity: Take a minute to reflect and write down what you think distance learning / online learning is to you and your school.

Suggested Definitions:
learning over a distance
taking down barrier of physical locations
DL and OL not the same - both do bring down barriers of time and space
anytime learner is learning in something other than in face-to-face environment - often through technology

Other Definitions to Consider:

3) The "E-Learning / Distance Learning / Online Learning Continuum"

a) Consider Time & Space Continuum

b) Use one program / tool to meet multiple instructional needs

c) Understand the Spectrum of DL / OL Applications & Programs

4) What Distance / Online Learning tool(s) is right for your school?

Participant Activity: Take a minute to answer two primary questions:
1. What was / will be your target population?
2a. What tool did your school choose if your district has already
selected an application or product? Do you agree with the
choice in retrospect?
2b. What tools would you consider in the future?

Suggested Target Populations & Corresponding Tools
Two target populations - increase graduation rates (using Plato) & advanced placement classes (using learning management system Brain Honey to homegrow content)

Synchronous video classes pulled. Need solutions to fill gap - provide advanced courses for college-bound seniors. Concerned about cost of courses from other providers.

5) Further Discussion & Conclusion

Key Takeaways:
  • Understand your target population and the core instructional needs you are looking to address.
  • Be critical in your assessment of Distance Learning and Online Learning tools and programs.
